The kitchen is the central part of any home. Most people, especially those who have kids, spend a majority of their time here. Also, since you prepare the food here, no other place can take the importance the kitchen has.
If you are looking to be sustainable and eco-friendlier, you need to start from the kitchen. We all know that the environment is suffering, and we all are responsible for it. So, make changes in your kitchen habit if you wish to start healing the environment.
It is not only about making cleaner food. It's also about using cleaner instruments and utensils and more. In this blog, we are suggesting a few things that you can do to make your kitchen safer and eco-friendly.
1. Buy your produce from local market
When we go to the grocery store, we look for the best food. We think that if we buy food items that came from another state or city, they will be better and healthier. It isn't true at all. The food that you get from your local farmers is the best. It is naturally produced in your region. It does not require any injections or harmful chemicals. If you want a product that is not natural to your region, it will either be full of chemicals or come from far. Furthermore, when you buy local food, the food doesn't travel far. That means you are saving carbon emissions from transportation.
2. Use organic coffee and disposable coffee pods
Coffee is a staple in most houses. If you love drinking coffee, here are a few changes to make to support the environment.
Organic coffee
Start buying organic coffee instead of going for non-organic. Organic coffee is delicious while ensuring the survival of the forest. It doesn't use chemicals or pesticides, so it is better for you and doesn't cause soil erosion. Lastly, when you buy organic coffee, you support farmers growing them.
Disposable coffee pods
If you love using coffee pods for brewing your morning cup, switch to disposable coffee pods. The plastic pods are challenging to recycle and harm the environment a lot.
3. Use cookware that lasts long
You do not want to buy cookware that you have to throw away after a few uses. Not only does it cause a dent in your budget, but it fills the landfill with tons of garbage. Thus, instead of using non-sticks, go for cast-iron or stainless-steel cookware. They also help you make your food healthier. Same goes for the daily utensils you use for eating or drinking. No plastic or cheap wooden utensils! Go for steel or glass utensils. They look classy and are better for all.
4. Reduce food wastage
Food wastage is still at large. We know that several people sleep without having a proper meal. Yet, we continue to waste food. Never cook more than you can eat. If you make extra, put it in a box and eat it later. Or donate it to people who need food.
These changes are not over-the top. Start with a simple change, and then move on to the others. A happy and healthy kitchen= happy you & environment.
