| | | New to HBO Max in January 2023: The Last of Us, Velma, The Menu, and More | | by Adam Bankhurst Jan 11, 2023 | | HBO Max is starting the year off strong with some highly-anticipated movies and TV shows, including The Last of Us. This adaptation of the PlayStation classic follows Pedro Pascal's Joel and Bella Ramsey's Ellie as they travel the U.S. in hopes of finding a cure to a sickness that destroyed modern civilization as we know it. In our review of the first season of The Last of Us, we said that it is "a stunning adaptation that should thrill newcomers and enrich those already familiar with Joel and Ellie's journey alike." Fans of Scooby-Doo will be happy to know that HBO Max's Velma series will be released on January 11 and will tell the origin story of Mindy Kaling's Velma Dinkley, the "unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang." On the movie front, the first three John Wick movies will be available from the first of the month to prepare you for John Wick: Chapter 4 later this year, and Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy's The Menu will also become available to all subscribers on January 3. If that wasn't enough, January is also the month that HBO Max and TNT become the home of live soccer coverage for the U.S. Women's and Men's National Teams. The first game will be the USWNT vs. New Zealand on January 17. Yesterday, Netflix announced the game's arrival on mobile with a trailer. According to Netflix's in-app description, the mobile port still features controller support and online multiplayer gameplay. Inspired by arcade beat 'em ups of the '90s (and including quite a few improvements to their combat systems), TMNT: Shredder's Revenge sees the classic Turtles, along with a few newly playable characters, taking on new foes through a campaign mode and an arcade mode. IGN gave TMNT: Shredder's Revenge an 8 in our review, praising its "fun combat, a charming and nostalgic pixel aesthetic, and one of the best soundtracks of the year so far" despite its occasionally tedious level design. In recent months, Netflix has added quite a few notable games to its roster, including indies like Spiritfarer, Into the Breach, and Before Your Eyes. The streaming service is also developing games of its own, including what seems to be an AAA shooter game, through its new studio. However, Netflix hasn't had an easy time getting subscribers to play its games, with less than 1 percent of subscribers playing games via Netflix as of August.
